Alone

The Nightside novels by Simon R. Green feature a city beneath London and yet not, where it is always three in the morning and those born to the city often have 'gifts' or powers. Nightside is home to beings from all times and all places, even imaginary ones.

He dragged me through tiled, Muggle-packed tunnels, seemingly taking turnings at random.

"Let me—"

His gloved hand hit the back of my head, hard. "Understand this, Draco. You failed. There is nowhere in this world where you can escape the Dark Lord's wrath." His eye fixed on some strange symbol above the door of a cupboard, and he pulled the door open and pushed me inside.

Ignoring the straw dummies dressed in uniforms, he picked up the handset of the payphone on the cupboard wall and said one word. "Nightside."

The walls slid apart. Severus ushered me on alone.
